Welcome to the first edition of Be Civil π
Why Start?
Where do you go for interesting, authentic and personable content from within civil construction? I couldnβt answer that π€·ββοΈ
So Iβm giving it a crack π
Bit of Background
I spent 10 years playing professional Rugby League in the NRL. Yes I still have my brain cells - well, most of them π€―
I completed my civil degree during my playing career, part-time across three different universities! It took 10 years! And juggling these commitments was one of the hardest and most enduring things Iβve ever had to do.
For the past 5 years I have been working on major infrastructure projects in site/project engineer roles across NSW.
Reflecting on this, there are some definite similarities between professional sport and construction teams. When you strip it back, we are all just trying to build something together.

The high performers in both industries have a lot in common!
More than youβd think.
Iβm sure every Civil Engineer will tell you how valuable they are and that society is in desperate need of more of us.
Well, they are right!
According to Infrastructure Australia there is a five-year pipeline of major public infrastructure projects valued at $237 billion π°π°π°πΈπΈπΈ
Currently we are facing a shortage of 214,000 skilled workers and this is projected to get worse - article here.
See the problem?
Letβs make this career choice more appealing for the next generation by showing the interesting, challenging side of this industry and how we work together in teams to produce critical pieces of infrastructure.
