On the Australian East coast, there has been decades of demand for a high speed rail network between our major cities.
The NSW Government went as far as spending $100million on feasibility studies, looked at the geotechnical challenges, and threw that one in the too hard basket. The initial capital and risks due to the requirement for long tunnels and large-span bridges throw some spanners in the works.
Cost predictions now sit close to $140billion (click for link to article).
Perhaps this process from the NSW government, was a simple call out for federal help - albeit an expensive one. All things considered, it is still hard to imagine our nation in 20 years time without a high speed rail line connecting our major cities.
Such a large-scale, transformative project like this will take a long time, and when we look to a comparable project overseas, it took them over two decades.
